Jim Corbett Safari Booking Rules & Entry Gate Verification Protocol

Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) operates under statutory conservation guidelines mandated by the Uttarakhand Forest Department (UKFD), the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), and the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Safari permits are non-transferable legal gate passes issued on a strict quota basis. Review the comprehensive procedural requirements below prior to reserving your permit.

1. Step-by-Step Forest Department Gate Pass Verification Protocol

Standard Operating Procedure across all Corbett Entry Barriers

Stage 1: Quota Scheduling & Advance Permit Generation

E-permits for Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve are released electronically across designated rolling booking windows. Indian nationals can request safari permits up to 45 days in advance, whereas international travelers can secure quotas up to 90 days in advance. Because entry quotas per zone (such as Bijrani, Dhikala, Jhirna, Dhela, Durgadevi, and Garjia) are capped to safeguard wildlife habitats from vehicular overload, permits are issued strictly against unique government identification serial numbers.

Stage 2: Mandatory Gate Reporting Windows

Visitors must assemble at their designated entry check-post exactly 30 to 45 minutes prior to scheduled shift departure. Gates adhere to non-negotiable seasonal timings:

  • Morning Shift: Summer (05:30 AM – 09:30 AM) | Winter (06:00 AM – 10:00 AM). Gate barrier lowers at 06:15 AM sharp.
  • Afternoon Shift: Summer (03:00 PM – 06:30 PM) | Winter (01:30 PM – 05:00 PM). Gate closes immediately after shift clearance.

Key check-posts include Amdanda Gate (Bijrani Zone), Dhangarhi Gate (Dhikala Zone & Canter Safaris),Dhela Gate (Jhirna & Dhela Zones), and Durga Devi Gate (Durga Devi Zone). Late arrivals forfeit permits without exception.

Stage 3: Physical Document Cross-Verification at the Range Barrier

At the entry barrier, the Forest Range Officer inspects the official computerized manifest against the original photo identification presented by every single passenger. The forest department strictly prohibits guest substitution, permit re-assignment, or name alterations after ticket issuance. If any traveler listed on the permit manifest fails to present the exact matching ID, they will be barred from boarding, while the remaining validated passengers may proceed.

Stage 4: Registered Gypsy Allocation & Guide Roster Deployment

Under forest conservation rules, private personal vehicles are prohibited inside core tourism zones. Safaris are conducted exclusively in green-certified, four-wheel-drive Maruti Gypsy safari vehicles registered with the Corbett Tiger Reserve administration. In addition, an authorized forest naturalist guide is randomly allocated via an impartial daily roster system maintained by the range clerk. Guide assignments cannot be requested or exchanged.

Stage 5: Departure Timestamping & Curfew Enforcement

Prior to entering the sal forest tracks, the Gypsy driver logs the starting odometer reading and timestamp. All safari vehicles must exit back through the assigned gate prior to the designated evening curfew. Overstaying past sunset incurs hefty statutory fines, vehicle impoundment, and an automatic operational ban on the responsible commercial safari driver.

2. Mandatory Government Photo Identification Rules

Statutory identity requirements for Indian citizens and international visitors

Every visitor, regardless of age group, must possess valid government-sanctioned identity credentials. The exact identity number submitted during the online reservation step must match the original physical card produced at the entry gate. Digital photocopies, mobile screenshots, college IDs, student union passes, and employee identity cards are strictly invalid and will be summarily rejected by forest enforcement officers.

For Indian Nationals

  • •Aadhaar Card: Standard physical card or downloaded e-Aadhaar with clear photo and full 12-digit number (or verified masked UIDAI credential).
  • •Passport: Valid Republic of India passport with current expiry validity.
  • •Voter ID Card (EPIC): Official Election Commission of India photo identity card.
  • •Permanent Driving License: Plastic smart card driving license issued by a state RTO (Learner licenses are non-compliant).
  • !Note on PAN Cards: While occasionally accepted for booking verification, several forest range barriers require address-supported photo IDs (such as Aadhaar or Passport). We recommend carrying Aadhaar or Voter ID for zero friction.

For Foreign Nationals & NRIs

  • •Original Valid Passport: Foreign citizens must produce their original national passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of travel.
  • •Indian Visa / E-Visa / OCI: Active electronic tourist visa printout or physical OCI / PIO card must accompany the passport at gate check-posts.
  • •Diplomatic Passports: Official protocol clearances must be forwarded in advance if requesting state forest rest house transit.
  • !Exact Spelling Match: International names must exactly match the permit manifest down to the middle initial. Discrepancies between visa and permit records will nullify entry rights.

Rules for Children & Minors:

Children below 5 years of age are permitted free entry without individual seat allocation but must be accompanied by parents with verified identity proofs. Children aged 5 years and above require full individual permits and must be registered with their Aadhaar card, valid passport, or official municipal birth certificate.

3. Cancellation Clusters & Refund Hierarchy Matrix

Transparent breakdown of government regulatory fees vs. operator logistics

Safari bookings at Corbett involve two distinct financial structures: statutory government entry fees paid to the Uttarakhand Forest Department, and vehicle/operator logistic services. Refund determinations are executed in accordance with the following defined cancellation clusters:

Cluster A: Government Statutory Permit Fees

100% Non-Refundable

As per the strict administrative directives of the Chief Wildlife Warden and Corbett Tiger Reserve management, all forest department entry permits, passenger road access charges, guide quota fees, and government reservation duties are 100% non-refundable and non-transferable immediately upon permit generation. Dates, zones, shifts, and passenger identities cannot be amended once booked on the portal.

Cluster B: Safari Vehicle & Logistic Operator Services

Cluster C: Force Majeure & Severe Climate Emergency Closures

Administrative Rescheduling

In circumstances where forest zones are abruptly closed by the Field Director, Corbett Tiger Reserve due to monsoon flash floods, Ramganga/Kosi river overflow, landslides, high security alerts, or sudden wildlife census operations:

  • Guests are offered automatic re-routing into adjacent open safari zones (e.g. Jhirna or Sitabani Buffer) subject to vehicle availability.
  • If all park zones are shuttered under emergency governmental order, logistical fees are converted into a 12-month travel credit voucher or refunded in line with forest department emergency remittance protocols.
  • Operator liability is strictly limited to safari booking fees and does not cover external airfare, train tickets, or independent hotel tariffs.

4. Field Preparation, Dress Code & Forest Conduct

Strictly enforced codes under the Wildlife Protection Act

Neutral Color Attire

Wear earth-toned clothing such as khaki, olive green, muted brown, and beige. Bright colors (red, fluorescent yellow, orange) can agitate large mammals and deter wildlife. Strongly scented perfumes, colognes, and deodorants are strictly forbidden.

Silence & Noise Discipline

Maintain total silence during animal sightings. Do not shout, whistle, or wave arms to elicit responses from tigers or elephants. Mobile phones must be switched to silent mode. Portable Bluetooth speakers or musical instruments are strictly banned.

Zero Plastic & Vehicle Rules

Jim Corbett is a strict zero-plastic sanctuary. Disposable water pouches and plastic snack wrappers must remain inside the Gypsy trash bin. Stepping out of the vehicle inside the park is a non-bailable wildlife violation punishable by immediate arrest and heavy fines.
